FAQ: Corten Steel Rusting (What to expect)
Our Corten steel products are supplied as raw steel and may arrive with a clean or lightly weathered finish. As soon as they’re exposed to air and moisture, they will begin rusting naturally.
How long does Corten take to rust?
Corten starts changing almost immediately. You’ll usually see early colour changes within days, with a more even rust tone developing over the following weeks and months. A deeper, more stable patina typically forms over 3–12 months, depending on the environment.
Will the rust keep changing colour?
Yes — and that’s part of the appeal. Corten develops a living finish that evolves from bright orange tones to deeper, earthy browns over time. Every piece will weather slightly differently.
Does Corten eventually stop rusting?
Corten is designed to form a protective outer patina that slows corrosion once established. In normal outdoor conditions, this patina stabilises over time and helps protect the steel underneath.
Why is my Corten rusting unevenly or looking patchy?
Early rusting is often uneven and blotchy — this is completely normal. As exposure continues, the finish becomes more consistent.
Will Corten stain concrete, pavers, or decking?
Yes — during the early rusting stages, Corten can produce rust run-off that may stain surrounding surfaces. We recommend placing your item on gravel, garden beds, or a protected surface while the patina develops.
Can I speed up the rusting process?
Yes. Light water exposure helps trigger the patina. The rust finish develops best through wet and dry cycles, so outdoor placement is ideal.
Can I stop or seal the rust finish?
Corten is designed to weather naturally, and we recommend allowing the patina to form. If you’d like to reduce run-off or lock in the appearance later, sealing options are available — feel free to contact us for advice.
Is rust considered a fault?
No — the rusting process is expected and intentional with Corten steel. Colour variation, surface texture changes, and patina development are all part of the natural finish and are not considered defects.
Is Corten suitable for outdoor use?
Yes. Corten is commonly used in architectural and landscape applications because it’s durable, long-lasting, and designed to weather beautifully over time.
